Doctoral Workshop “Mind Games: Perception in Words, Worlds, and Frames”

Mindgames ©Amerikanistik

Date: June 18, 2024 | Time: 1:00–6:30 p.m. | Place: SR 15.41 (RESOWI: Universitätsstraße 15 Bauteil A, 4. Obergeschoss)

Keynote Lectures:

  • Ralph Poole (University of Salzburg, Department of English & American Studies), “The Queer Virtuosity of Deception in Mary Wilkins Freeman's Understudies”
  • Jørgen Bruhn (Linnaeus University, Center for Intermedial and Multimodal Studies, Växjö), “Intermedial Studies as Environmental Theory”

The PhD workshop, entitled “Mind Games: Perception in Words, Worlds, and Frames”, is designed as a one-day colloquium to give doctoral researchers networking opportunities at the University of Graz and beyond. Participants are enabled to present their research under the thematic frame of 'perception' to both a local and an international audience of experts. Participants will have the chance to receive feedback from both their peers and professors, i.e., local staff and international experts.

The projects that are concerned with the faculty's key topic of 'perception' and with related issues will be presented in 20-minute talks. Each presentation will be followed by a 10-minute discussion. The PhD researchers will get a variety of feedback – by their peers, experienced researchers from the University of Graz, and international experts. They will also be able to learn from the keynote speakers' research and get inspired by it.

The workshop is supported by the doctoral programme “Culture - Text - Action” and is organised by a team of scholars interested in literature and culture. It is primarily aimed at doctoral students from the humanities, but also pursues a cross-faculty approach. The workshop ties in with the main topic of the new research focus “Perception: Episteme, Aesthetics, Politics” at GEWI Graz. Philosophers, historians, art historians, cultural scientists, literary scholars and linguists as well as representatives of Aging and Care Studies and the Digital Humanities are involved in this research and are invited to participate in the workshop.

A key aim of this workshop is the promotion of young researchers. It offers a forum for discussion, further development, and networking opportunities among doctoral candidates and senior researchers. In addition to the international experts and the five presenting doctoral students, all other researchers and students working on the topic of perception are being invited to take part in the discussion of the doctoral students' research projects.

Organizers:

  • Stefan L. Brandt, Department of American Studies
  • Christine Schwanecke, Doctoral Programme Culture — Text — Action, Centre for Cultural Studies
  • Lisa Buchegger, Department of American Studies
  • Philip Steiner, Department of American Studies
