U.S. Presidential Elections

Lecture and Roundtable Discussion

Lecture
by Sabine Kim (expert on Trump era, Obama Institute, Johannes-Gutenberg University, Mainz)

“White Liberalism and Black Lives Matter: Race in the Age of Trump”
Trump’s attitude toward race is deeply divisive, from his parody of colorblind neutrality when equating white nationalists and antiracist activists as “very fine people on both sides,” to his ramping-up of police presence at Black Lives Matter protests. This makes him an easy target, as if replacing Trump is the solution. But the more fundamental problem is that he sustains a discourse on race and racism that does not acknowledge the breadth of white privilege in the US.

Roundtable Discussion
Discussants:

Stefan Brandt (professor of American Studies and author of “Donald Trump, the Reality Show”, University of Graz)
Ronald D. Gerste (historian and author of four monographs on U.S. presidents, Washington DC, via live connection)

Sabine Kim (postdoc and co-author of "Transnational Studies in the Age of Trump", Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz)
Jennifer Schumm Fauster (senior lecturer and coordinator of the JD program in English/American Studies, University of Graz)
