This talk analyzes the term “intersectionality” as defined by Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw in relation to the digital turn and argues that intersectionality is the dominant framework being employed by fourth wave feminists and that it is most apparent on social media, particularly Twitter. The hashtags #UnboundSoWhite and #Solidarityisforwhitewomen, serving as my case studies, showcase the local, national, and international reach and complexity of Twitter feminism.
Tegan Zimmerman is an Assistant Professor in English/Creative Writing & Women’s Studies at Stephens College, a small liberal arts women's college in Columbia, Missouri. She studies contemporary women’s historical fiction and contemporary gender theory. Her monograph Matria Redux: Caribbean Women Novelize the Past is forthcoming from Northwestern University Press; this Spring semester she is the Käthe-Leichter Visiting Professor in Gender Studies at the University of Vienna.
The event is free and open to the public. This guest lecture is co-organized by the Department of American Studies and the Coordination Centre for Gender Studies and Equal Opportunities.
